the Differences in Marketing Strategies for Large Companies Versus Small
Companies?

Hi Kevin, I'm researching the differences in marketing strategies for large
companies versus small companies.
Might you have any words of wisdom on this? I know that financially, larger companies have larger
marketing budgets, but they also have more hierarchial layers to work through
in their planning process than a smaller company. Any areas to focus on would be appreciated. Thanks Carol.
Carol,
good question. As an entrepreneur
I have been both the President of a company that I have taken public on Nasdaq
and have owned and operated very small businesses too. In addition, I have represented
literally hundreds of clients to help them grow their business internally and
externally on the web and off the web. And quite simply the same basic
principles of marketing apply to any company no matter what size they are,
where they are located, whether they are product or service companies or how
long they have been around.
The
problem is that not all companies are created equal based on the knowledge
level of the leader in charge of the marketing for the company. Even people who are educated in
marketing are not necessarily skilled in it nor do they really understand the
many ways that a company can create growth and profitability. They become focused on only the one or
two and maybe even three ways to market and don't understand there is a whole
war chest of techniques and strategies you can use that are cross pollinated
across a variety of industries to produce results.
Carol,
there are three and only three ways to grow any business.
1. Increase your number of customers or
clients.
2
. Increase the transaction size of any individual purchase by a customer or
client.
3. Increase the frequency that you
do business with each of your customers and clients.
Underneath
each of these three ways there are a dozen or more different strategies you can
use to accomplish each one. Some
are surprisingly simple. But all
can be very powerful and can easily multiply your business profits when they
are implemented successfully.
In
fact, when combined they can catapult your business to new levels of revenues
and profits.
The
trouble is that not all businesses are created equal when it comes to marketing
leadership and these can be both big and small. However, a bigger company will more usually have this type
of expertise in house where a smaller company won't.
The
typical problem for a small company is that the owner has a passion for the
business, products, services etc., but has not been exposed to this type of
marketing information and can only do what they know how to do. Or they copy what their competitors
do. They mostly rely upon one or
two or maybe three techniques to grow build market share... i.e. advertising,
direct mail and yellow pages. Or they
are operations oriented and not marketing driven and consequently don't realize
that it all begins with a customer.
As we all know, there is no need for an accounting department,
production or operations without a customer.
A
small business will stay trapped into this cycle and many times march to the
front line of business failure statistics unless they reach out and get help
from someone who can bring them the marketing tools they can use to grow sales
and profits.
Another
consideration is that a larger company can also grow by acquisition to
penetrate new markets by acquiring complimentary companies and products,
technology, distribution channels, markets etc. Whereas a smaller company cannot usually do this because of
limitations of capital, management expertise, systems, personnel, etc.
